EXAM STRESS

One of the most stressful and worrying times for 16 year olds is getting closer - exam time. The time that causes stress, worry and anxiety. 


You may have noticed they are not sleeping as well, feeling sick, not eating properly & changes in their temperament. All this can be down to the fact they are worrying about doing well or not doing well in their exams. They might be concerned they won’t remember all the information, worrying about what will happen if they fail, how this might impact on them getting on to the college course or apprenticeship they want.


All of these thoughts & feelings can actually affect their ability to learn and revise.


Last year I worked with a young girl who really wanted to do well in her exams and was revising at home each night but her anxiety was causing her to feel sick and not sleep well. This impacted on her learning. She felt that as soon as she approached the exam hall, she would panic and forget all that she had learned and therefore not do well in the exam. This was causing her great discomfort.


We did a Belief Coding® session to see where this came from and it stemmed from a past experience in junior school. A teacher was giving her parents some feedback on how she could improve but my client felt she had let her parents down. Unaware, she created a belief of not being good enough. Fast forward to now, she believed if she didn’t do well in her exams she would be letting her parents down which meant she wasn’t good enough which was causing her to worry.


We worked on the memory, giving her younger self everything she needed in that moment - love, security, confidence and a voice. We then coded in some new powerful positive beliefs such as I am more than good enough, I am always calm in exams, I am smart, capable and intelligent.


Months later, Mum told me her daughter did really well in her exams and got the grades she needed to start her college course - both were buzzing!
